Understanding Emphysematous Pyelonephritis: Causes, Diagnosis, and Management
Abstract
Emphysematous pyelonephritis (EPN) is a rare, severe, life-threatening necrotizing infection of the kidney characterized by the presence of gas within the renal parenchyma, collecting system, or perinephric tissues. It primarily affects individuals with compromised immune systems, particularly those with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus. Early recognition and prompt management are crucial to prevent significant morbidity and mortality.
