Topical Issues of Acute Appendicitis
Abstract
Today, acute appendicitis is the most common reason for admission to the surgical emergency room. For example, in the UK, more than 40,000 hospital admissions per year are recorded and 42,000 to 47,000 operations are performed for acute appendicitis. And in the United States, about 326,000 appendicitis surgeries were performed in 2007. The lifetime risk of developing the disease in the United States is reported to be 8.6% in men and 6.7% in women, with an annual incidence of 9.38 per 100,000 people.
