Abstract

Depression is one of the most common mental illnesses. Epidemiological studies conducted in Europe over the last decade have shown a prevalence of depression of 3–6% in the past 12 months. There is evidence that 10% of men and 20% of women may develop various types of depression during their lifetime. At least 200 million people are diagnosed with depressive disorders every year. According to WHO, the prevalence of unipolar depression is 1.9% for men and 3.2% for women; 5.8% of men and 9.5% of women experience a depressive disorder over 12 months.
