Abstract

Background: Urinary stone disease is one of the most common diseases worldwide and can be described as a widespread disease.

Aim: This study largely focuses to enroll surgical treatment of upper urinary tract stones in terms of pain levels, complications, and satisfaction with patients, evaluate post-operative health quality of life.

Methods: A total of 82 patients underwent upper urinary tract stone surgery by laser lithotripsy in Baghdad hospitals in Iraq from April 2023 to April 2024. The surgical outcomes of the patients were recorded in terms of complication rates clinical and diagnostic data in the hospital. A general questionnaire was conducted to assess the quality of life for general health.

Results: A data of 82 patients with upper urinary tract stones were included in this study. Patients with age (36 - 45) years were the most participated in our study, where males got 64.63%, and females got 35.37% of total patients, almost all of patients had 40.24%, and smokers included 68.29%. The upper urinary tract stone symptoms are prevalent in our patients, included flank pain in 93.90%, hematuria in 17.07%, and fever in 20.73%. The surgical outcomes of patients enrolled in stone size was 16.4 ± 11.2 mm, lower pole calyx got 45.12%, postoperative complications had 12.2%, and the rate of patients had very satisfied was 80.49%. The main factors affecting the surgical results of laser lithotripsy included age, symptoms, size, and location of stones, smoking, comorbidities, and complications.

Our study indicates that laser lithotripsy is the procedure that yields the highest patient satisfaction ratings due to provides a high recovery time, a short procedure time, and an improved quality of life for patients.
