Postpartum hemorrhage is bleeding from the birth canal that occurs early or late after childbirth. Postpartum bleeding is often the result of major obstetric complications. The severity of postpartum hemorrhage is determined by the amount of blood loss. Bleeding is diagnosed during examination of the birth canal, examination of the uterine cavity and ultrasound examination. Treatment of postpartum hemorrhage requires infusion-transfusion therapy, introduction of uterotonic agents, suturing of ruptures, and sometimes hysterectomy.
