FINANCIAL STRESS IN MODERN FAMILIES AND ITS PSYCHOLOGICAL CONSEQUENCES: A SCIENTIFIC-ANALYTICAL INQUIRY

Abstract

Financial stress in contemporary families and its psychological consequences remains a poorly understood but critical topic. A conceptual framework integrating family systems theory and psychological theory guides inquiry and analysis. Family systems theory emphasizes interdependence and shared responsibility, highlighting the role of communication, the transmission of stress, and the need for coping and resilience. Psychological theory contributes stress, coping, attachment, and resilience concepts, offering a basis for empirical hypotheses. Grounded in this framework, a systematic examination of the literature reveals mechanisms, risk factors, and protective processes linking financial stress to psychological outcomes. Contemporary families experience significant financial stress, raising questions about its psychological consequences. Therefore, this investigation focuses on two broad questions: (a) How does financial stress affect individual families and their members? (b) In what ways are these effects communicated among members of the same family? These questions arise from an assessment of the literature indicating high levels of financial stress among families and a growing interest in its psychological consequences. The relevance of the topic is underscored by theoretical formulations and research findings highlighting the link between financial stress and psychological well-being, together with the family-oriented perspective adopted.
